COURSE DESCRIPTION (SPEAKING)
This course will help you improve your overall ability to understand and use spoken English. Materials include a variety of topics and activities to assist you in becoming a more confident and proficient English communicator. You will also develop your vocabulary and learn useful phrases to speak naturally and more fluently about a wide variety of topics.
NECESSARY THINGS
1.Three B6-size index cards (or notebook page, MS Word, etc.) for making conversation cards
2.File or folder to organize all of your materials for the year and keep track of your progress
3.Textbook: Kindt, D. (2019). Tools for Increasing Proficiency in Speaking (TIPS),
Book 1 (sound files: www.profkindt.com/site/tips_contents.html)
GRADING: A+ (90~100), A (80~89), B (70~79), C (60~69). Note all assignments must be submitted before the deadline, see WebClass. The Speaking part is 50% of your total English 2 grade:
1.Preparatory assignments: 9% (3 x 3)
2.Three Students’ Own Conversation Cards (SOCCs): 6% (3 x 2)
3.Report 1: Free Time script, peer revision, and evaluation: 10%
4.Report 2: Part-time Jobs script, peer revision, and evaluation: 10%
5.Final report: Technology script, peer revision, and evaluation: 15%
SPEAKING/LISTENING GOALS: By the end of the academic year students can...
1. Use classroom expressions in English (How do you say ume in English?)
2. Use conversation strategies to start, maintain and conclude conversations in English
3. Describe daily routines, past events, and future plans
4. Identify and use vocabulary for contemporary topics and everyday functions
5. Respond to show agreement, disagreement, understanding, and surprise
6. Make comparisons, suggestions, requests, complaints, and speculations
7. Understand and explain schedules, dates, and times
8. Use expressions for obligation and permission
9. Give opinions on general topics and support them
10. Ask questions for clarification or elaboration
11. Give a 2-minute self-introduction
12. Give a 3- to 5-minute presentation in English on a personal or academic topic
13. Maintain a conversation for 3-7 minutes in English on a personal or academic topic
14. Identify and summarize the main idea and supporting details from a 1- to 3-minute listening
task on familiar topics (e.g., school, work, etc.)
15. Dictate or take notes from a 1- to 3-minute listening task
